How to Make a No Sew Fleece Scarf Tutorial

Fleece is such a warm, cozy fabric that it makes a fantastic choice for making a scarf. The fact that it is a knit fabric makes it even better because you can make a scarf without having to sew. In this tutorial I will show you how to make an easy no sew fleece scarf that anyone can make in no time at all!

How to Make a No Sew Fleece Scarf

Supplies Needed

  • 2 yards of fleece fabric (You will actually be able to make 2-3 scarfs from one 2 yard piece of fleece but you cannot use one yard of fleece because you need the length of 2 yards. If you want to make a longer scarf you totally could you would just need to buy extra fleece.)
  • scissors or a rotary cutting set
  • painter’s tape or chalk

What Kind of Fleece Should I Use?

Some fleece fabrics will work better for a scarf than others. Most types of fleece will work well, like polar fleece, blizzard fleece, and anti-pill fleece, and micro fleece. Plush, velvet, and minky fleece don’t work quite as well because they are flakey when you cut the fabric and they shed a ton.

Prepare the Fabric

Prepare the fabric by washing and drying it.

Lay your fabric out flat. Cut off the selvedge edges from both sides of the fabric. This is the area on each side that is about an inch from the edge. It usually has the manufacturer and designer info printed on the one edge. The other edge matches the color/design of the fabric but it does not look nice and typically has holes in it.

After cutting off the selvedges you want to square the fabric off. This means you make sure the fabric is actually cut straight across the bottom and top. When they cut it at the fabric store they do not necessarily line everything up straight plus your fabric can shrink up some when you wash and dry it so you should do this before every project.

I highly recommend using a rotary cutter, cutting mat, and quilt ruler. This will enable you to cut much straighter than doing it by hand. You can get a rotary cutting set with all 3 of these together.

If you do not have a rotary cutting set with a quilt ruler then you will want to use some sort of yardstick or straight edge. Lay down the straight edge and trace your lines with chalk. Then you will be able to cut a straight line with your scissors.

Cut the Scarf

Now you are going to cut a piece of fabric for the scarf. For an adult scarf I would cut a scarf that measures the entire length of your fabric X 18 inches-20 inches wide. I say the entire length rather than a precise number because you will start with a 2 yard length of fabric (72 inches) but it will shrink some when you wash it. For this tutorial my scarf ended up being about 69 inches long X 20 inches wide.

For older kids the adult size would probably work but for a smaller child I would adjust the size down to something more like 56-60 inches X 12 inches.

You can play with the measurements as you want, you may want it to be skinnier in width or shorter in length. Cut it to a length and width that are a good length and width for you or for the person you are making it for.

Cut the Fringe

Lay your cut scarf down on the cutting board. Use the quilt ruler to measure 4 inches from the edge of the short end of the scarf. Mark the line with the painter’s tape or the chalk. This way you will get straight, even cuts.

Then use the quilt ruler and rotary cutter to cut the strips for the fringe. I cut mine to be 1/2 inch wide.

Remove the painter’s tape or if you drew a chalk line then wash the scarf to wash the chalk away. And you’re done with your no sew scarf!

Tips

  • Make sure your rotary cutter blade is sharp (or your scissors if you are using those).
  • If you get some flaking after you cut the fringe then wash and dry the scarf and it should get most of it off.
  • This is a really easy project for beginners!
  • Your local homeless shelter might accept donations of scarves and hats for the winter so this diy fleece scarf would be a great project to make and donate.
