I love making felt flowers. You can find such pretty colors of felt and you can use them to decorate wreaths, headbands, home decor pieces, and more. So today I’m going to share my felt rose DIY tutorial so that you can make your own easy felt roses.
If you have a cutting machine you can make these super easily BUT you don’t need a cutting machine to make a beautiful flower from felt! You can make handmade flowers with just a few basic supplies from your house and a felt sheet or two from the craft store.
There are a couple of different techniques for how to make your own felt flowers but I find this to be the one I like the most.
Supplies Needed
- Felt
- Pair of Scissors
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Pencil or pen
- Circular object to trace (a cup or jar lid will work)
Felt Rose DIY Tutorial
Trace and Cut
Use your circular object to trace circles onto the felt. Use different sizes to make different size roses. In thinking of sizing you are going to need to use a circular object that is quite a bit larger than the rose that you would like to make. I used a roll of painter’s tape, a bowl, and a plate for my roses.
Cut out the circles. Be sure to cut outside of the line so that there’s marks on your rose petals.
Spiral
Start from the outside edge of the circle and cut a spiral shape into each circle, moving toward the center.
Shape
Cut a wavy edge along the top of the curve. This will help you make the petal shapes for your rose.
You can play with the shapes that you cut into this to figure out what kind of a look you like. You might like very dramatic waves or you might like to have just a slight wave along the top. You can control your flower shape by how you cut the wave and how you roll it, which I will explain in the next section.
Roll and Glue
Begin in the middle of the spiral. Dot a little glue along the bottom edge of the curve and start rolling the flower from the middle toward the end of spiral. Keep gluing and rolling until you reach the end.
How tightly you roll it will determine the overall look of your rose, so you can play with how tightly or loosely you roll it to try to get the look that you want.
And now you’re done with your rose flower! If you want, you can cut out some leaf shapes from some green felt to add on some leaves. And if you’re looking to make a rose with a stem you could use some floral wire, cover it with green felt, and attach it to the bottom of the rose.
For a different look you could also use fabric to make your own diy roses and flowers following this same technique.
Uses for Felt Roses
You can use the felt roses to decorate a bunch of different things. A few ideas for felt roses include:
- Headbands, hair clips, and other hair accessories
- Decorating gift wrapping
- Home decor items like wreaths, garlands, and pillows
